SCULPTING OUTSIDE THE LINES
FOGGY BOTTOM OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBIT
OPEN TO GRADUATE ART SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE WASHINGTON DC, VIRGINIA
AND BALTIMORE METROPOLITAN AREAS
Sculpting Outside the Lines will be the third biennial exhibit of outdoor sculpture in the Foggy Bottom Historic District, Washington, DC. Arts in Foggy Bottom, a project of the Foggy Bottom Association, sponsors the exhibit. The goals of the Exhibit are to (1) enrich the cultural environment of the Foggy Bottom community by providing exposure to the visual arts, especially sculpture; (2) create educational opportunities for residents, non-residents and students as they relate to the visual arts; and (3) draw the attention of people who live outside of Foggy Bottom to this unique, historically-significant residential neighborhood.
Curator Laura Roulet will select approximately 15 sculptures to be sited on private property, with 2-3 of those works chosen from this open call for student entries. Artists whose work is chosen will receive an honorarium of $1,000, divided into two payments of $500 at installation and $500 at de-installation. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Sculpting Outside the Lines aims to expand the boundaries of traditional outdoor sculpture. It explores the discourse between public and private by creating an active social space. Utilizing unexpected sites and surprising penetration of art into everyday settings, this exhibit seeks engagement with the Foggy Bottom neighborhood and community at large.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE WORK:
Three-dimensional freestanding and suspended outdoor sculpture, installation and new media are encouraged.
Sculpture will be selected based on artistic merit and appropriateness to location site and exhibition theme.
Sculpture must be constructed of materials that can withstand normal outdoor weather conditions.

Sculpture must be safely and securely installed into or on the specified site.
The Foggy Bottom Association will insure sculpture for the duration of the exhibit.
Sculptors agree to repair work should it become damaged, and that work shall remain on the site for the length of the exhibit.
Sculpture will be available for sale, if the artist agrees, with the homeowner of the site reserving the right of first refusal.
Selections are final. Changes of sculpture or site can only be made in consultation with the curator.

ABOUT THE CURATOR Laura Roulet is an independent curator and writer, specializing in contemporary and Latin American art. She has organized exhibitions in Puerto Rico at el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and in Washington DC at the Art Museum of the Americas, the Mexican Cultural Institute, Edison Place Gallery, Hillyer Art Space, Project 4, Fusebox and the DC Art Center. Her publications include many catalogue essays, encyclopedia entries, articles in Art Journal, Sculpture, and the book Contemporary Puerto Rican Installation Art, the Guagua Aerea, the Trojan Horse and the Termite. She worked on the Ana Mendieta retrospective, organized by the Hirshhorn Museum in 2004, and contributed to that catalogue.
ABOUT THE VENUE The Foggy Bottom Historic District is bordered by 24th to 26th Streets and H to K Streets NW. Its architecture is composed of narrow, flat-fronted brick row houses, many dating to the 19th and early 20th century. The area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This biennial outdoor exhibit is designed to promote community spirit and public enjoyment of contemporary art. Throughout the exhibit, guided tours will be available led by artists or docents, and self-guided by brochure or cell phone.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE THROUGH THIS CALL Graduate students in sculpture or new
media studies in art programs in the Washington DC, Virginia and Baltimore metropolitan
areas are eligible. Applicants must become student members of the Washington
Sculptors Group ($15.00 annual full-time student rate) to apply through the slideroom.com
site.
APPLICATION PROCESS All submissions for Sculpting Outside the Lines will be processed through the on-line submission service www.slideroom.com. Applicants may submit up to 5 images either displaying the proposed work or providing a detailed plan of work proposed, similar to the work shown. An artists statement and c.v. or website is desirable.
